About Book

"As the human population grows and lifestyles change, the production, use, and disposal of man-made toxins rise. The environment is frequently the final recipient of this growing quantity and variety of pollutants, a significant fraction of which may be genotoxic or carcinogenic. This is a significant obstacle for regulatory bodies and environmental managers seeking to safeguard the quality of natural resources. This is especially true because many hazardous substances may exist in concentrations greater than the detection limit, despite significant advancements in methodologies for determining the fate and concentrations of contaminants in various compartments of the environment (viz. soil, water, sediment and biological samples). Ecotoxicology's ultimate objective is to elucidate and forecast the consequences of pollution in the context of all other environmental elements. On the basis of this knowledge, the most efficient and effective course of action for preventing or resolving any adverse outcome may be determined. Ecotoxicological studies can aid in the decision-making process for restoring ecosystem services, structures, and functions efficiently and effectively in those ecosystems already impacted by pollution.

This book provides the latest perspectives on emerging toxic risks to the environment, such as nanomaterials, pharmaceuticals, chemical mixtures, and perfluorooctane sulfonate. It factors in the sublethal effects of pollutants on population levels, and cites an increase in the concentration of persistent pollutants in natural food chains as a cause of the decline of certain vertebrate predators. It focuses on the challenges of anticoagulant rodenticides, pyrethroid insecticides, soil ecotoxicology and toxicity to wildlife and humans. It also deals with nanotoxicology, biotests in ecotoxicology and ecotoxicology of glyphosate-based herbicides. This essential reference guides users through existing and novel approaches to environmental risk assessment, then presenting recent advances in the field of ecotoxicology, including omics-based technologies, biomarkers, and reference species. For all those who are interested in ecotoxicology, ecology, conservation, chemistry, public health, wildlife management, fisheries, and many other disciplines, this book can prove to be an essential guide.
